The Gaylord Palms, Kissimmee FL

If I had to sum up my experience at the Gaylord Palms in Kissimmee, FL, it would be one word…SPECTACULAR!

But anyone who knows me knows I can’t just stop at one word, so I’ll give you the whole scoop.    I was in awe from the moment I walked through the automatic revolving doors, complete with beach scenes in between the glass panes-too cool!

I visited the Gaylord Palms this past weekend with my husband and 7 1/2 year old daughter.  It is Florida’s best kept secret for a family getaway.  I had no idea the scope of the Gaylord Palms.  It is truly an engineering marvel.

Just minutes away from Disney World, the Gaylord Palms offers a unique experience touting 4 different areas under one HUGE atrium.  From Old Key West to the Everglades to a fort in St. Augustine, the Gaylord Palms has it under one roof.

My daughter couldn’t get a grip that what looked like was outside, was really inside.

Walking back from the pool. The sun is shining...inside.

Rivers flowed, complete with fish native to the area of Florida being represented.  Waterfalls cascaded near spots where  alligators and turtles rested together.

There was even a 60 foot schooner in a fish filled lagoon, which mind you, was really a fabulous restaurant in the Old Key West area; the schooner, not the lagoon…

In the Emerald Bay area were shops, conference rooms and a convention hall.  While having coffee, my daughter looked at a grand staircase and balcony and said “this would be a great place to have a wedding”.  I looked up, and complete agreed.

There are two pools.  The South Beach Pool is for people 18 years and older, more of a romantic escape.

The Octopus Slide

Clearwater Cove is for families with kids, complete with a water spray area, sand dunes and a really cool octopus slide.  It’s amazing how these types of things really bring out the kid in you.

From burgers by the pool, to sushi to gourmet dining under the stars (well, electric stars-remember, we are inside), there is dining for every taste.  Of course, no hotel stay is complete without room service.

All the rooms have a balcony-some rooms have two.  Whether you have an atrium or outside view, the views are spectacular.  The rooms are spacious, clean and have a wonderful “feel” to them.  Incidentally, the beds are really comfortable.

We stayed in the Deluxe Suite. I HIGHLY recommend it.

There is a fabulous nightlife which includes music from live bands.  My favorite thing about this was that the volume was at such a great level, you really only heard the music when you were near the band.  Remember, you are inside a huge atrium and sound carries, but the engineers at the Gaylord Palms thought of everything, including sound management.  The lights at night are gorgeous.

The view from our balcony.

You feel as if you are overlooking a beautiful oasis complete with palm trees and twinkling stars.  There were banana trees outside our balcony that actually had bananas growing on them.

There are activities and events put together by the staff.  While we were there, there was a mini-guitar scavenger hunt.  Perfect for the musicians in our family.

Teeny tiny guitar.

I recommend the Gaylord Palms in Kissimmee, FL to anyone looking to have a wonderful time that is completely out of the ordinary.  My one regret is I didn’t have a chance to make it to the spa-maybe next time.

  1. As you know Dara, our family loves to visit Florida and we are always interested in trying new places. We have experienced Disney several times and enjoyed the Hilton Vacation Club so I am really digging your new FL travel review section!!!

I would love to repost this review on my blog and will keep the Gaylord Palms in mind for our next trip! You and I can do the spa together!!! Of course only you would have noticed the sound management — but as a mom you get just how important that is when little ones are trying to sleep. I honestly don’t think our family has ever seen a real banana tree!! Way cool!!

Sounds like a great place. It’s always nice to learn of new places to try for future Florida trips. By the way, your daughter is a real cutie! :)

  3. I used to live near this area, many years ago and now see how much the area has grown. This place looks SO beautiful. I had no idea everything was under one roof. One stop shop, if you will. Thanks so much for showing us this, I have already put it on my list for the next time I’m in the area. Can’t wait!
