The New Zoo Review…Of the Palm Beach Zoo

A Personal, Family Friendly Place to go

I had a great weekend.  We had some beautiful weather and a fabulous family day.  We went to the Dreher Park Zoo, also known as the Palm Beach Zoo,  in West Palm Beach, FL.

I love the personal feel of the Palm Beach Zoo.  It is small enough that you can park right near the entrance, but big enough to spend the whole day.

Lots to See and Do

The zoo is separated into different regions; Central and South America, The southeast (Florida wetlands), Australia and also by animal.  We saw alligators, otters, bears and even Capybaras.  The Capybara is the largest rodent.  It looks like a huge guinea pig, and is really cute.  If you stay till the end of the day, you can see the animals being fed.  We really enjoyed watching that.

Birds are everywhere both as part of the exhibits as well as Florida birds taking  advantage of the beautiful surroundings.  The Wings Over Water bird show was great, and we learned a lot about birds and how they are trained.

Conservation is what the zoo is all about.  Animals of all kinds find a home at the Palm Beach Zoo.  There was a special Demoiselle Crane that had irreparable damage done to it’s leg.  A prosthetic leg was designed and fitted onto this majestic bird.  It was amazing to see him walk around like it was his own.

Walking through the zoo is a wonderful experience.  The foliage includes bamboo and other tropical plants.  The winding paths are scenic and really keep you cool in the Florida heat.  My favorite is the sausage tree.  Yes, the sausage tree.  Although nothing edible grows on it, you’ve got to love it.

The Tropics of the Americas included a Mayan plaza and the local wildlife of Central and South America.  There were bats and snakes and a beautiful jaguar named, what else, Maya.  There were great photo ops here.

Animal keepers walk around the zoo so we were able to see animals close up.  The sloth was really interesting, and moves super slowly.

The zoo has so much to do.  After we ate lunch at the Tropics Cafe, we set out to see the puppet show and do some crafts.  Kids of all ages were able to learn about the animals and do some hands on projects.  What a great souvenir.

No trip to the zoo is complete without going to an area called Tiger Falls.  There are two tiger brothers who reside there.  We got there in time for the Tiger talk, and learned all about these amazing cats.

The carousel is a great attraction for the kids.  It is beautifully appointed with all kinds of animals from eagles to zebras to dragons.

Don’t forget your bathing suit and towel when visiting the Palm Beach Zoo.  Florida gets hot, and the interactive fountain is a welcome reprieve.  Kids of all ages, and even a few grown ups had fun playing in the fountain.  There are even changing cabanas so you don’t need to stay wet when you are done playing.

We really enjoyed our day at the Palm Beach Zoo and it is one we will talk about and remember for time to come.
